New logistics terminal opens in Langenfeld, near Düsseldorf.
14,500 sqm facility built to DGNB Platinum standard
Noerpel subsidiary WEHNER significantly expands logistics capacity
On 8 March 2024, the Noerpel Group officially opened a new low-emission logistics terminal in Langenfeld, near Düsseldorf. Thanks to its sustainable design and equipment, the facility meets the requirements for DGNB Platinum certification and operates on a CO₂-neutral basis. The 14,500 sqm site will soon be occupied by WEHNER Logistics GmbH & Co. KG, a Noerpel Group subsidiary specialising in e-commerce fulfilment. This second location in Langenfeld will increase WEHNER's available logistics space to over 20,000 sqm.
The opening ceremony was hosted by Lucas Noerpel-Schneider, a member of the Noerpel Group's management board, and Mark Wehner, the managing director of WEHNER Logistics GmbH & Co. KG. Customers, business partners and employees were invited to tour the facility and experience its key features first-hand. Thomas Zacharias, Head of Corporate and Investment Advisory Services at the City of Langenfeld Economic Development Agency, which supported the project, delivered welcoming remarks at the event.
'With this facility, we are setting new standards for modern logistics services,' said Lucas Noerpel-Schneider. 'We deliver first-class e-commerce solutions for our customers while also fulfilling our commitment to greater sustainability in logistics.'
Highly Equipped for Growth
The logistics centre initially has 15,900 pallet spaces, 5,000 shelving locations, a small-parts warehouse and more than 30 packing stations, as well as partially automated warehousing systems. WEHNER plans to increase capacity to 20,000 pallet locations and 20,000 shelving positions in its final expansion stage. The site offers ideal conditions for the efficient fulfilment of e-commerce orders, high-quality contract logistics and integrated, all-in-one logistics solutions. Fourteen loading bays, including two suitable for mega trailers, ensure the efficient handling of inbound and outbound goods.
WEHNER has already secured several new customer projects for the site, including a renowned company from the toy industry. Other customers have moved their inventory into the facility, including a recognised manufacturer of reusable food and beverage packaging systems. Through its deposit-return model, the company actively supports reducing packaging waste.
Low-Emission Operations
The focus on sustainability extends throughout the terminal. The building features a low-emission design and meets the criteria required for the highest certification level awarded by the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB). Measures to promote sustainability include a 1,000 kWp photovoltaic system, air-source heat pump technology throughout the facility, energy-efficient LED lighting and extensive roof and façade greening with an integrated irrigation system and water cistern. The site also includes charging infrastructure for e-bikes, electric cars, and future electric trucks. All of the facility's electricity, including that used by the heat pump system, is sourced from 100% renewable energy. Consequently, no fossil-based energy is used during operations.
Growth Strategy Continues
With the new facility, WEHNER now has two logistics sites in Langenfeld, expanding its total logistics footprint to 20,500 sqm. 'We are delighted to continue our recent growth with the move into this new facility,' said Mark Wehner. 'Together with the Noerpel Group, we will continue to expand our tailored logistics services.'
As specialists in e-commerce fulfilment, WEHNER brings over 15 years of industry experience to the table. The company joined the Noerpel Group in September 2023. Its expertise in warehousing solutions, shipping management, and after-sales services also benefits customers at other Noerpel locations.
