Togetherness as the Key to Success: IDS Celebrates 40 Years

To mark this milestone, IDS has put swap bodies featuring the anniversary logo on the road.

Kleinostheim, 5 May 2022. Small beginnings can lead to great achievements. In 1982, eight well-established, owner-managed freight forwarding companies with strong regional roots joined forces to create the first nationwide cooperation for the groupage sector. This marked the birth of IDS, which is still the largest groupage freight network in Germany today.

Even in the early 1980s, the founding members recognised that medium-sized logistics providers needed a comprehensive network to remain competitive in the long term. Their goal was to empower each partner through the exchange of expertise, data, and personnel while preserving their complete entrepreneurial independence. Four decades later, the vision of delivering high-quality, nationwide groupage services through close collaboration remains as relevant as ever. This vision is also reflected in the company name: IDS stands for Interessengemeinschaft der Spediteure (Association of Freight Forwarders).

A strong network

IDS has given its members the opportunity to connect successful regional transport operations with a nationwide logistics network. For customers, this means seamless transport services across Germany through a single point of contact, rather than having to deal with multiple contracts and service providers.

Today, IDS comprises seven shareholders, four franchise partners, 51 groupage depots and handles more than 16.6 million shipments per year, employing over 7,000 people. The strength of the network lies in its closely connected depot structure.

'The cooperative model based on equal partnerships has proven its value to this day,' says Michael Bargl, IDS's Managing Director. 'Reliable logistics require an exceptionally well-functioning network and people who bring that network to life through expertise, responsibility, and consistently high-quality performance.'

IDS attributes its success to clear rules for all partners and efficient decision-making processes, whether through compelling service portfolios, demanding quality standards or innovative solutions. This structure enables the organisation to respond quickly and professionally to challenges such as the pandemic, exceptional shipment volumes and cyberattacks. As Michael Bargl explains: ‘Cooperation is not always easy. One of our founders described it as hard work. But that is precisely what defines IDS: we are focused on the facts, we are fair in our dealings, and we are always striving for the best possible solution. That is the secret behind our success.'

Continuous growth

Despite significant seasonal fluctuations, national shipment volumes have increased from 9.4 million to 13.3 million consignments over the past ten years alone. Consistently high levels of investment by network partners have helped to maintain the quality and stability of the IDS network. During this period, eight new depots were added, increasing total terminal space by 24 per cent. Looking ahead, IDS plans to expand its network from 51 to 60 locations over the next decade. A key element of this strategy is maintaining a consistent dual-depot structure in metropolitan regions and fast-growing areas such as Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Frankfurt and Stuttgart.

Innovative concepts

IDS has been setting benchmarks in the groupage market since its foundation. As a driving force for innovation, the network has repeatedly helped to establish new industry standards. While the introduction of IDS ONE DAY in 1989 — offering a nationwide, 24-hour standard delivery service — was considered groundbreaking at the time, more recent examples include automated recipient identification and notification systems for private deliveries, as well as GPS-based tracking of all IDS swap bodies, providing greater transparency regarding linehaul arrival times.

Alongside developing new products and identifying industry trends, the central organisation of IDS, the heart of the network, continuously monitors service quality and optimises operational processes. One of the defining challenges of the coming decade will be managing the energy transition within the groupage logistics sector.
